SOON AFTER INDEPENDENCE IN THE YEAR 1947 THE TRUCKS AND BUSES OWNED BY OPERATORS LIKE N.D. RADHAKRISHNAN, ALLIED CHIRAG DIN & SONS AND NANDA BUS SERVICE GOT HELD UP ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BORDER WITH THE RESULT TRANSPORT SERVICES AND MOVEMENT OF ESENTIAL COMMODITIES COLLAPSED ABRUPTLY AS THE PRIVATE TRANSPORTERS WERE RELUCTANT TO COME FORWARD FOR TRANSPORTATION OF FOOD GRAINS AND SHIFTING OF REFUGEES WHICH CREATED CRISES LIKE SITUATION. IN ORDER TO DEFUSE THE CRISIS AS AN ALTERNATEIVE THE GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHED GOVERNMENT TRANSPORT UNDERTAKING (GTU) ON 5TH OF JANUARY, 1948 WITH A FLEET OF 50 TRUCKS WHICH WERE PURCHASED FRO0M M/S GENERAL MOTOR CORPORATION BOMBAY. WITH THE GROWING DEMAND FOR INTERVENTION OF THE GOVERNMENT IN THE PASSENGER TRANSPORT, FLEET OF BUSES WAS ALSO INTRODUCTED IN THE FLEET GOVERNMENT TRANSPORT UNDERTAKING (GTU). THE GOVERNMENT TRANSPORT UNDERTAKING (GTU) ESTABLISHED ON 5TH OF JANUARY 1948 WAS SUBSEQUENTLY CONVERTED INTO COROPORATION (UNDER SECTION 3) OF “THE ROAD TRANSPORT CORPORATION ACT -1950” ON FIRST OF SEPTEMBER 1976.
